AFC Bournemouth announced one of their first big signings of the summer on Friday: Emerson Hyndman, the 20-year-old American who has spent the last few seasons with Championship side Fulham.

Hyndman, a native of Dallas, Texas, joined the Fulham youth academy at age 15 in 2011. He made his first team debut with the club in 2014.

I’m a Fulham fan and have seen plenty of Hyndman, who struggled to find time in an underperforming Fulham team that ran through a lot of lineups. Hyndman is a tidy midfielder with a nice first touch and decent vision. (His grandfather is former FC Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman.)

Hyndman, who made 17 appearances for Fulham this past season, is at his best when he forces the issue and tries to get dangerous balls forward, though at times he can look lost and let the game dictate how he plays, as opposed to the other way around.

And while he was at times disappointing in the last season — USMNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann went as far as saying he “disappeared” — it’s important to remember that he’s 20 years old. Clint Dempsey was still playing at Furman University when he was 20 years old. Hyndman still has time to become something great.

Hyndman is the fourth American player to currently be listed on a Premier League side roster, joining Matt Miazga of Chelsea, Geoff Cameron of Stoke City and DeAndre Yedlin, who plays for Sunderland.
